In case you missed our radio show last night, we were talking a topic important to countless animal advocates across the United States: safe transport protocols for shelter animals. From home-checks to proper volunteer training, it is imperative that we as volunteers, transport coordinators and directors do our very best to make sure our furry passengers arrive safely from Point A to Point B.

Listen to the show here:

With the help of our guests on last night’s show, we collected a few best practices for this type of transport:

  • Paperwork goes along with each animal — ALL documents for that animal need to stay with that animal
  • A health check and health certificate (if required) should be completed by a veterinarian prior to travel
  • Tag on the animal with contact info
  • Dogs should be double leashed with two collars, two leashes, or a martingale collar
  • Assume every dog is a flight risk!
  • Slip leads should be used when loading and unloading dogs
  • Observe proper disease prevention
  • Lock back door windows, set child safety locks

We know there are even more tips and tricks for safe transport, and would love your input! Drop your best practices in the comments, or feel free to join the conversation on Facebook.

The dogs thank you!
